Trying to cure a case of the "gimmies"

So this time of year is especially exciting for children.  Why? Presents, presents, presents.  As much as I keep reinforcing that presents are not what Christmas is all about, the main topic of conversation with the kids these days seems to be about what they want, and what they are going to get....or at least what they think they will get.  Uggggh!   It is not easy to teach a child that is better to give then to receive.  Each year we've been picking out a toy for Toy's for Tots.  The kids do enjoy picking the toys out for the donation, but in the process they usually search the toy isles for toys to add to their list.  This year we decided to participate in some things through each of their schools.  From Kaitlyn's school, we picked a mitten off of a tree which contained a specific gift request from a little boy or girl from a needy family, and we bought some puzzles for a 6 year old girl.  Nathan's school has a program called Helping Hands which provide Christmas gifts for 5 families in need.  On our list was things like towels and sheets.  Nathan thought a toy would be more fun to give, but I asked him "If you had no blankets to keep you warm at night, would you rather have a toy, or a blanket so you wouldn't be cold?"  I think he understood that this family will really appreciate these practical gifts too, and he was happy to contribute.

One thing we do Christmas morning....in keeping with my childhood tradition, is sit and read the story of Jesus birth before any gifts are open to remind them what the day is all about.  I'm going to try to drag out the gift opening as well this year.  They usually tear through everything so fast and then want it all opened.  They are old enough to understand and I'm making an effort to change their attitudes this year and at least stop and say thank you and appreciate each gift before moving on.  I'll let you know how that goes!

To give Kaitlyn some credit....she was asked at Kids Club last week, along with all the kids in her class what her favorite thing about Christmas was.  While most of the children said getting toys or presents, she said "decorating our Christmas tree!"  That's my girl!....a decorator like her Mom!

Kel, I'm glad you are carrying on the tradition of reading from the Bible before you open gifts. After all, Jesus WAS the first gift. Even the tradition of scrambled eggs... you and Jason's family are carriyng that on. Warms my heart that these are treasured moments from your childhood!
Thank you!! Love, Mom
